In short
Cord & Flame is a game for couples, played together on one phone. What you write in the game is never saved or sent anywhere. It exists on your screen for a moment, then it is gone. Accounts are optional. We do not sell data, and we do not show ads.
Who we are
Cord & Flame is owned and operated by Faith Flow Technologies Inc., based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean Faith Flow Technologies Inc. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, where it applies, Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). If you have any question about your privacy, write to privacy@cordandflame.com.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.
What the game keeps, and where
To remember where you are, the game saves a few small things on your phone: your two nicknames, which night you are on, the date you last finished a night, whether you play with faith content, your pace, your church code if you add one, and a few on-screen choices, such as whether we have already offered you a reminder. If either of you tells the check-in that things feel very distant or very hard, your phone also remembers to suggest extra support, without recording who said it. That note stays on your phone only.
This information stays on your phone. It is never sent to us, and we cannot see it. The only exception is the anonymous play counts described below, which never include your nicknames. We suggest nicknames rather than real names so that even this contains nothing identifying.
The app also keeps a few small temporary markers in your browser's session storage so the same night is not counted twice in our anonymous play counts. They contain no names or answers and are cleared when you close your browser. If you choose to set a nightly reminder, it is created in your own calendar on your phone. We never see it.
What the game never keeps
Your answers, the secrets you read, and anything else you type during a night are never saved on your phone and never sent to us or anyone else. When you move to the next card, what you wrote is cleared from the screen and from the app's memory.
If you create an account
Accounts are optional. If you choose to save your progress, we keep your email address and the same few things the game keeps on your phone: your two nicknames, which night you are on, the date you last finished a night, faith content or not, your pace, your church code if you added one, and a few on-screen choices. These are stored with our database provider, which may process them outside Canada. Your answers are still never saved. You can download this information or delete your account at any time from your account page, and deleting it removes it from our database. We use your email only to send your sign-in code and to reply if you contact us. If you ask for a sign-in code but never use it, we delete that email within a day.
Your private check-in
Before your first night, each of you answers three quick questions on your own. Your answers are never shown to each other and are never saved. They are used in that moment to choose a standard or gentle pace. One answer, how close you feel, is also counted anonymously, as described under Anonymous closeness readings. If you play on two phones, the answers travel encrypted to the phone running the night, are used the same way there, and are then discarded.
Playing on two phones
If you play on two phones, your answers travel from one phone to the other encrypted, so only your two phones can read them. They pass through our real-time service without being saved, and we cannot read them. The pairing code expires after ten minutes and is deleted within the hour.
Visiting the app
Like almost every website, the service that hosts Cord & Flame receives basic technical information when your phone loads the app, such as your IP address, browser type and the time of the visit. Our hosting provider uses this to deliver the app securely and to give us simple, aggregated statistics such as the number of visits, device types and approximate country. We use these statistics only to understand how many people use Cord & Flame. We do not use them to identify you, and we do not combine them with anything you do in the game.
Our hosting provider may process this information on servers outside Canada, including in the United States.
Anonymous play counts
To learn whether Cord & Flame is helping, the app sends us an anonymous count when a night, including the one-card Night Zero, is started, when a night is finished, when an extra "One more" card is played, and when a two-phone night is started. Each count contains only which night it was, whether you play with faith content or without, your pace, what happened, and the date. It contains no names, nicknames, answers, email addresses or device identifiers, and we do not store your IP address with it. We see these only as totals, such as how many nights were finished on a given day, so we cannot link them to you or to any couple.
These counts are stored with our database provider, which may process them on servers outside Canada.
Anonymous closeness readings
At the start, after your fourteenth night and after your twenty-eighth night, each of you privately taps how close you feel, from 1 to 5. We receive only an anonymous count of each number chosen, with the date, whether you play with faith content or without, and your pace. It never includes names, nicknames, answers or anything that could link the two readings to each other or to you. We use these totals only to learn whether Cord & Flame is helping couples feel closer.
Anonymous nightly ratings
After each night you can tap how it went. We receive only an anonymous count of each choice with the night, the date, faith content or not, and your pace. It never includes names, nicknames, your email or anything that could link it to you, even if you have an account.
Church codes
If you join through your church's code, your anonymous play counts, closeness readings and ratings carry that church's code. Your church sees only totals, and nothing at all until at least five couples have started. No one at your church can see your nicknames, your answers, or whether you in particular are playing. You can remove the code at any time under Change how you play.
If you register a church
We keep the church's name and location, your name, your role and your email, to approve the church and to contact you about it. You can ask us to remove your church at any time.
Nightly notifications
If you turn on notifications, we keep the address and the sending keys your browser gives us, the time you chose and your time zone. We do not link this to your nicknames, your progress or your account. Turn notifications off at any time and we delete it.
What we do not do
- Nights 1 to 28 are free. We never see or store card numbers.
- You do not need an account, name, phone number or email address to play.
- We do not use advertising or advertising trackers.
- We do not sell, rent or trade personal information.
- We do not use your information to train artificial intelligence.
If you contact us
If you write to info@cordandflame.com or privacy@cordandflame.com, or use our contact form, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and your message. Messages from the contact form are delivered to us by our email provider, Resend, which may process them on servers in the United States. Our email inboxes are hosted by Google Workspace, which may also process messages outside Canada. We do not store contact form messages in the app. We use what you send only to reply to you, and we delete it when it is no longer needed to help you. When you use the form, we send you a short confirmation email that does not repeat your message. Please do not send us private details about your relationship unless you want us to read them.
Removing your information
Most of what the game keeps is on your own phone, so you are in control. To erase it, clear this site's data in your browser settings, or remove the app from your home screen and clear your browser's website data. You can also write to privacy@cordandflame.com to ask what information we hold about you, which will usually be none, or to ask us to correct or delete it. Deleted accounts are removed from our backups within 30 days.
Keeping the service safe
To stop abuse, when you use sign-in, the contact form, pairing or notifications we briefly keep a scrambled code made from your device's internet address. It cannot be turned back into the address and is deleted within 24 hours. If something goes wrong on our servers, we record which page failed and the error message, with personal details removed, for up to 30 days. We keep private daily backups of our database for 30 days so we can recover from mistakes. They hold only the information described in this policy, never anything you type in the game.
Who Cord & Flame is for
Cord & Flame is designed for adults aged 18 and over in a committed relationship. It is not intended for children.
Keeping things safe
We collect as little as possible so there is as little as possible to protect. The app is delivered over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
If something is hard
Cord & Flame is a game, not counselling. If your relationship is going through a difficult time, a licensed counsellor can help. If you are ever unsafe at home, contact your local emergency services. You will find support options at cordandflame.com/help.
Changes to this policy
If we add new features, such as accounts or payments, we will update this policy before they go live and change the effective date above. If a change affects how we handle your information in a meaningful way, we will tell you in the app.
Concerns
If you are not satisfied with our response to a privacy concern, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca).
